Phred says: “I just saw the 25TH HOUR, and read a bunch of reviews. Opinions are extremely mixed, with some people loving and others hating it. I loved it. It has many many faults. The dialog is sometimes embarrassing, the music early on overbearing, some plot points seem phony, the pacing is choppy and inconsistent. It’s like Spike Lee takes specific points in the film and blows them up, too much and in different ways. But I loved it.
“The three male lead – Edward Norton, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Barry Pepper are particularly excellent. Philip, as a nebbish, has one scene where an underage female student he has a crush on comes on to him, and he barely moves, yet I think it’s one of the best acted scenes he’s done.
“I don’t quite know why this film works so well for me, but somehow all the mismatched and disjointed pieces come together in a original and satisfying way.” 4 cats
