Thom says: “This highly-praised WWII film by the talented Mendes (AMERICAN BEAUTY) is especially impressive with its technical gifts following two British soldiers as they navigate a rough battle path trying to avoid bombs, bullets, & accidents hoping to deliver a life-changing message that their troops are headed for a trap. While it was highly praised for being one, long 2-hour story that was filmed in that exact time frame I found that detracted from the desired feeling. Except for the 2 leads no actor really had any chance to emote with interest because their parts were too short, so the film was characterless. Moreover, while their was much hoopla over the continuous story no one mentioned Aleksandr Sokurov had made a film in 2002 called RUSSIAN ARK that was not only a continuous story but one, single, continuous take. 1917 has a gazillion shots as numerous cameras filmed the action. 3 1/2 cats“
