For its annual year-end Top Film category, the CHLOTRUDIS SOCIETY FOR INDEPENDENT FILM (CSIF) this year has compiled a list of the top 100 Coming-of-Age films among its 100+ membership. To create this list, members were asked to come up with their personal Top 30 films defined as a film genre which focuses on the psychological and moral growth of the protagonist from youth to adulthood. The age at
which this transition takes place varies in society, as does the nature of the transition. Personal growth and change is an important characteristic of this genre, which relies on dialogue and emotional responses, rather than action. Themes of developing sexual identity, personal philosophy, and political opinions are often featured.. Topping the list is Mike Nicholss classic coming of age film, THE GRADUATE. It should come as no surprise that John Hughes, master of the 80’s teen movie (which is often a coming-of-age story) has the most entires on the list, numbering three. His top film is THE BREAKFAST CLUB coming in at #4, followed by FERRIS BUELLER’S DAY OFF at #19, and SIXTEEN CANDLES at #21. It is interesting to note that PRETTY IN PINK, which he wrote, but did not direct, is also represented at #86. A whopping 18 of the films on the list were directed by women, lead by Debra Granik’s 2010 Chlotrudis smash, WINTER’S BONE, in at #10. But it was Australia’s Gillian Armstrong with the notable distinction of being the only woman director to appear on the list twice: she’s in at #80 with MY BRILLIANT CAREER, and #97 with HIGH TIDE. What is also notable about Armstrong’s films here is that they both star Judy Davis!
We hope you enjoy our list of the 100 Top Coming-of-Age Films.
