Bruce says: “What do you do when you are between projects and the financing for your next project just fell through? If you are writer/director/editor Cory James Krueckeberg and producer Tom Gustafson you raise $10,000 on Kickstarter, pull together a loose script and make THE GO DOC PROJECT. This is the team that brought WERE THE WORLD MINE to the screen a few years back; the duo co-wrote that film but Gustafson directed.
“Doc (Tanner Cohen) is in his last days of being an undergraduate at Columbia University. He knows that he will be leaving New York in three weeks. He is not very social, has few friends and favors jacking off to web cam sex rather than meeting up with the real thing. While surfing sex sites, Doc discovers Go (Matthew Camp) who is a stripper at a local club. For the semi-reclusive, obsessive Doc, a guy like Go is simply unattainable…unless there is a gimmick. Doc contacts Go online under the guise of being a filmmaker who wants Go to be the subject of a documentary, a way of getting into the head of a male stripper. Go agrees to meet Doc at the strip club. When Doc is too shy to introduce himself, Go figures out which one in the crowd is Doc. After the show he grabs Doc on the street.
“Doc is in a bind. Suddenly a filmmaker, he quickly has to buy a camera before the next meeting with Go. Doc is uptight; Go is laid back. Doc begins interviewing Go and the film is underway. When Doc asks what his favorite body part is, Go says, ‘I like my brain.’ Go, of course, has the whole scheme figured out. He is a streetwise kid who has learned how to use his body by using his brain.
“During the interview sessions Go begins to take over and the roles begin to reverse. Before you know it, Doc has his clothes off and is in Go’s bed. What was meant to be a triumph is suddenly a lament. ‘I honestly feel dirty and not in a good way. Here I am an amateur porn performer.’ Could romance truly be in the air?
“THE GO DOC PROJECT has a terrific score and both the romantic New York City and the seedy New York City are very much characters in the film. Tanner Cohen appeared in WERE THE WORLD MINE playing a gay high school student whose life takes a turn when he is cast in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Matthew Camp, in real life, is a male stripper who is slowly branching into other endeavors such as costume design.
“Krueckeberg captures an element of the gay scene quite accurately by examining both sides of the coin – those who use sex to get by and those who obsess over it. The Internet has had an enormous impact on the sexual lives of gay men. On the one hand it is how most men meet or hook up; on the other hand the Internet is what keeps many of them at home, increasingly fearful of making contact with those they lust for. 3.5 cats
