Michael says: “It’s not an international film festival without a moody, introspective Icelandic film, and Pálmadóttir’s debut feature, SOLITUDE fits the bill beautiful, but as is often the case, such as in 2019’s riveting tale of grief, A WHITE, WHITE DAY, the film takes a more humanistic, grounded approach, this time about a older man who has lived a solitary life caring for the family farm who must relocate to Reykjavik as his land and former home is flooded by the building of nearby dam.

“Moving his life to the big city doesn’t immediately alter Gunnar’s solitary lifestyle, until an annoying neighbor gradually grows into a companion, and ultimately a friend. The fact that Gunnar’s new friend Ari, is ten years old is bound to raise some eyebrows, thus bringing the conflict into the story, but Pálmadóttir spins the relationship between the two with such care and warmth, without missing a beat or making anything overly sympathetic.
“While the focus of the film is on the relationship between Gunnar and Ari, it does explore Gunnar’s anger at being displace and frustration at the harsh realities of the world beyond the environment. A stunning return to his half-flooded home shows off some beautiful filmmaking and character depth simultaneously. 4 cats
