Chris says: “Internet dating in New York City during the COVID age is a compelling enough subject for a documentary, but it’s the way director Pacho Velez approaches it that renders it an essential one. For the most part, he simply turns the camera on a diverse array of subjects (in terms of age, race and sexuality) as they scroll through various dating sites (*nine* of them, according to the credits) while the camera also captures a faint visage of what they’re viewing (often blurred to respect the privacy of those being pursued.) The multiple perspectives on dating, relationships, attraction and, well, searching for a connection accumulate and ultimately turn into an affecting study of modern human nature, albeit at a very specific time. And the formerly Boston-based Velez, whose interludes of people interacting on city streets are often quietly lyrical, proves an endearing presence when he occasionally turns the camera on himself, scrolling through dating apps to find his own connection. 4.25 cats
