Diane says: “VA SAVOIR is a lowkey (and long!) romantic comedy about an Italian troupe performing Pirandello in Paris. Camille is strong on stage but falling apart offstage, looking for her former lover who lives in Paris.

“The interplay between what’s happening in real life and on stage is handled very cleverly, and offstage is directed like a stage play, too–Rivette even puts Camille and her husband in adjoining hotel rooms to maximize the number of doors that can be opened and shut. Unfortunately, the movie doesn’t
draw one in emotionally, and the other two female characters are not complex or well-developed enough to round out the film. One great scene is that in which Camille’s lovers confront each other in a duel. Some delightful parts, but overall just okay.” 4 cats

Robin says: “VA SAVOIR is the obvious work of a veteran filmmaker who maintains a sure hand on things, gleaning good performances out of his actors even with the sparse, conventional material at hand. It lacks the sparkle that an outstanding romantic comedy should have, but is an entertaining little farce, still..” 3 cats
