On Sunday March 17th, the Chlotrudis Society for Independent Film welcomes back poly-hypenate director Don McKellar to help celebrate the society’s 25th Anniversary Chlotrudis Awards at the historic Brattle Theatre. In addition, the society looks back on a favorite film, MARION BRIDGE, with director Wiebke von Carolsfeld (also returning) and the film’s composer Lesley Barber. Chlotrudis is thrilled to have this trio of Canadian film talent in the house! The show begins at 5 pm, and tickets are $20 ($15 for Chlotrudis and Brattle members), and can be purchased online at the Brattle’s website.
Writer, actor, director, producer, librettist. Film, theater, TV, animation, Broadway. Don McKellar is among Canada’s most acclaimed artists. The Society first honored McKellar in 2008, with its Body of Work award, in recognition of his contributions to such films as WHEN NIGHT IS FALLING (actor), LAST NIGHT (director, writer, actor), THE RED VIOLIN (writer, actor); TV shows TWITCH CITY (writer, actor) and SLINGS AND ARROWS (actor); and the Broadway musical THE DROWSY CHAPERONE (librettist). McKellar also costarred in one of the first films to win the Society’s prestigious Buried Treasure award.
Chlotrudis honors another early Buried Treasure winner, MARION BRIDGE, during this year’s awards ceremony by reuniting the film’s director and composer. Wiebke von Carolsfeld, a Montreal-based filmmaker, has been a steadfast friend since MARION BRIDGE, her directorial debut. She first came to the Society’s attention as film editor for Chlotrudis favorite THE FIVE SENSES, and was among the honorees at the 10th Chlotrudis Awards. She has since written and directed 2 films, STAY and THE SAVER.
Lesley Barber has been scoring films since 1995, for such notable and award-winning films as WHEN NIGHT IS FALLING, MANSFIELD PARK, MARION BRIDGE, YOU CAN COUNT ON ME, and MANCHESTER BY THE SEA. Among her upcoming projects is LATE NIGHT, starring Emma Thompson and Mindy Kaling. In addition to film, Barber has also scored TV series, and composed for theatre, classical ensembles and festival commissions. A multi-instrumentalist, conductor and pianist, she is a member of AMPAS, and the Alliance for Women Film Composers.
