David Gordon Green’s adaptation of A Confederacy of Dunces has been cancelled. Apparently, rather than bow to the crippling whims of the big Hollywood studios, Green and his script adapters, Scott Kramer and Stephen Soderbergh, pulled the plug on the project. To quote Green, “I believe in the dramatic foundation and comedic highlights of these characters and am not interested in the cartoon version of obvious comedy that has often been pushed for. I have yet to develop a project within the studio system that has been made, for whatever stubborn resistance to compromise on my part with the machine.” Sure to have been a fascinating project, the cast was to include Will Ferrell, Lily Tomlin, Mos Def, Drew Barrymore, and Olympia Dukakis. After Green’s little seen but wonderful UNDERTOW, it would be nice to see him get some more attention, but only on a project that is true to his independent spirit. Thanks to Ron for tipping me off to this bit of indie film news through his network of blogger friends.
