CHLOTRUDIS SOCIETY FOR INDEPENDENT FILM ANNOUNCES 2016 NOMINATIONS – ‘MOONLIGHT’ SHINES OVER ALL

MoonlightNominations for the 23rd annual Chlotrudis Awards were finalized by the film group’s nominating committee this past weekend. Barry Jenkins’ stunning MOONLIGHT was dominant among the 47 films nominated, winning 8 nods, including Director and Cinematography.  Placing second was LITTLE MEN, Ira Sachs coming of age film, which earned 6 nominations including Actor, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress. Both films were also among those selected as Best Movie nominations. The other films nominated for Best Movie were Korea’s THE HANDMAIDEN; Japanese auteur Kore-eda’s OUR LITTLE SISTER; MANCHESTER BY THE SEA, and MOUNTAINS MAY DEPART, from China.

A total of 28 countries are represented among the nominations, with the US less than 50% of the 47 nominations.  8 of the films are helmed by women, including CERTAIN WOMEN’s Kelly Reichardt, up for Best Director.  The rest of the Best Director field is comprised of 4 men of color: Barry Jenkins (MOONLIGHT), Hirokazu Kore-eda (OUR LITTLE SISTER), Jia Zhangke (MOUNTAINS MAY DEPART) and Apichatpong Weerasethakul (CEMETERY OF SPLENDOR).

In the Society’s most prestigious category, the Buried Treasure, the nominees are: THE FITS, about a girl who joins a dancetroupe dealing with mysterious seizures; FREE IN DEED, a true story based narrative about a faith healing in a storefront evangelical church;  NEON BULL, the story of a worker at a Brazilian rodeo;  TAKE ME TO THE RIVER, from a first-time director, a coming of age/ family thriller blend, set in Nebraska; a a 2nd debut, the horror film UNDER THE SHADOW, set in 1980s Tehran.

The Buried Treasure is the only category with eligibility requirements: nominated films must have earned less than $250,000 in its U.S. theatrical run. Member submit 1 film they feel strongly was given distributional short shrift and deserve a wider audience.  Once the final ballot is set, all members voting in the category must verify that they have watched at least 5 of the nominated films.

The Chlotrudis Society for Independent Film highlights its commitment to independent and foreign film in style, holding its CHLOTRUDIS AWARDS ceremony in early spring.  This latest edition will be held Sunday March 19h at the historic Brattle Theatre, and the public is invited to join Chlotrudis members, nominees and special guests in the celebration.

At the ceremony, Chlotrudis also presents special awards that honor individuals or films for particular distinction.  Past recipients Kerry Washington (Breakthrough Award ‘04), Beth Grant (Career So Far Award ‘09) and Philip Seymour Hoffman (first Hall of Fame inductee) are among those who have made the trek to Boston to be honored for their contributions to independent film.   This year’s recipients are still being finalized at press time.
